Choosing an Attorney

EXPERIENCE
One way to find out whether or not a lawyer has experience is to review their biography.   Do they appear to have expertise in the area of law that you need? Do they have any information on their web site that’s helpful to you?  Does the lawyer belong to any legal associations that cater to your type of case?

FREE FROM CONFLICTS OF INTEREST
If your case involves victim’s rights, select an attorney who does not represent criminal defendants. If your case involves a personal injury, find an attorney who does not represent any insurance companies.  If your case involves a bankruptcy, find an attorney who does not represent creditors.

PERSONAL SERVICE
Select a lawyer who will be accessible to you and with whom you feel comfortable. Your initial first impression can go a long way in helping you choose the right lawyer.  Look for a lawyer who, at your initial meeting, is timely, professional, and communicative. Find out who will be working with you, the attorney or an assistant.

LOCATION
Find an attorney who has offices located in a convenient location near your home or office.  You may need to meet with the attorney, drop off or sign documents. That convenience will be an asset.

GOOD REPRESENTATION
Your attorney is hired to provide you with good representation, but not specific results.  Be suspicious of an attorney who makes promises about the outcome of your case.
